Woes for Law School Graduates

August 13th, 2008 · No Comments

If you’re in the top of your class, the job hunt is exciting. However, for those who are average finding employment can be very difficult. Many students go to law school in hopes of being very successful and are quite devastated when they cannot find work after graduation. There are very few entry level positions.

Richard H. Sander claims that just as important as the law school is one’s grades when out in the market. Recruitment is mainly done the fall of a student’s second year, and those recruits will make up the bulk of the firm’s new employees post graduation. While the National Association for Law Placement shows, the median starting salary for the class of 2007 to be $65,750, very few actually made that amount. Over 40% feel between $40,000 and $60,000. With high debt, this is not good news for graduates.

96 Lawyers Laid-Off

July 31st, 2008 · No Comments

Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft have laid off 96 lawyers. The lawyers all practiced in real estate and securitization and were hit by the subprime meltdown. Due to the economy, the demand for real estate law has drastically decreased.

Recruiters recommend lawyers laid-off by the meltdown consider finance and corporate practices where their skills could be best utilized. When the market bounces back, many will be able to return to the field but in the meantime, it will be necessary for many real estate to change specialization or location where their services are in more demand.

Is the Texas Employment Rate Up?

July 10th, 2008 · No Comments

Approximately 8,700 jobs have been added in the state of Texas over the past year. That amounts for a 2.3% growth according to the Texas Workforce Commission. This is exceedingly good in comparison to the national average of only 0.2% during the same period.

However, unemployment is still rising. A record low rate of 4.1 percent occurred in April. It rose to 4.5% in May. While the number of jobs is growing, there are many which are still lacking.

New Recruitment Model Launched

July 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

Lateral Link was highly criticized when it started its unconventional business plan of paying $10,000 to every associate placed into a firm. However, competition has emerged with Legal Recruiting Authority now giving $20,000 to associates placed.

LRA was started by two law graduates of Northwestern. The recruiters attract members who are junior to midlevel associates in top law firms and are considering relocating. The members will be allowed access to a database which features open positions. Traditional recruiters are not happy with the new practice and label it unethical.
